Why a Kiss Might Stay With You for Life
Source: PMID 41223250 Epstein–Barr virus (EBV), the virus that causes glandular fever/mononucleosis, is most commonly transmitted through saliva, which is why it’s often nicknamed “the kissing disease.” Kissing allows for direct exchange of saliva, giving the virus an easy route from one person’s mouth to another’s. This close contact makes it the most efficient and frequent method of spread, especially among teenagers and young adults. While EBV can also be transmitted through sharing drinks, toothbrushes, or other saliva-contaminated items, these routes are far less common. Casual contact like talking or being in the same room doesn’t spread the virus. Because saliva transmission through kissing is so effective, it remains the primary reason EBV circulates widely and infects most people at some point in their lives.
